Tom Roehl Round-Ball Classic
The Tom Roehl Round-Ball Classic has quickly become one of the more popular events for Island Alumni to participate in. Not only do past teammates get to play together again, but it is also a great atmosphere for spectators and families to gather and catch up.
This event originally started as a fundraiser for the Coupeville Foundation for Coupeville Public Schools, while Tom Roehl was still coaching at Coupeville High School. He was heard commenting, "I've coached almost everybody playing...at some point or another." After 20 years serving as the CWYAA Basketball Director and 19 years as a Football coach, its no wonder he had worked with so many of the participants. While each year brings back a new graduate class for the holidays, a number of the players seen on the court can recite a few coaching points they picked up from Coach Roehl from years before. The event lost steam and went dormant for a few years. In 2007, after 5 years with no alumni basketball event, the Roehl family restarted it as a way to raise money for the Tom Roehl Memorial Scholarship.
The Tournament expanded from being a Coupeville School specific event to an Island wide event that draws teams from Oak Harbor, South Whidbey, Anacortes and even into Mukilteo. While past tournament champions have typically been from Coupeville, with the Team Red Pride owning 5 championships, new teams from other Island Schools have played in numerous championships. In 2016, the Tournament title headed north, to Oak Harbor. We look forward to seeing how the tournament titles play out in the future with many new and younger teams showing up each year.
